Athletic Director: Glynn Blackwell
Glynn Blackwell earned his B.A. in Program Management, specializing in Athletics and Recreation, from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, in 1989. Upon graduation, Glynn pursued his basketball career with the NBA on the Seattle Supersonics. After being released, Glynn traveled through Europe, playing professional basketball in Turkey and Greece. From 1992 through 1995, Glynn served a mayoral appointment as Deputy Director of Parks and Recreation in Highland Park, Michigan. From 1995 through 1998, Glynn traveled abroad once again to pursue the game of basketball in Mexico, the Philippines, Cyprus, and Estonia.
Glynn worked for the Highland Park School District as the Student Assistant Coordinator and After-School Coordinator for the program, PROJECT LINK, from 1998 through 2002. From 2002 through 2007, Glynn served as the Assistant to the Athletic Director at Faith Christian Academy, a ministry of Word of Faith International Christian Center. Glynn is a licensed and ordained minister of the gospel, seeking passionately to connect sports and ministry, for the glory of God.
Glynn now serves as Athletic Director of Franklin Road Christian School, developing a complete K-12 competitive sports program.
Athletic Advisory Board Member: Bryan Molnar
Bryan Molnar was a member of the first graduating class of Franklin Road Christian School, in 1996. He earned an Associates Degree in Liberal Arts from Oakland Community College. He is currently working toward his B.S. in Kinesiology, at Wayne State University. Bryan now serves as Assistant Athletic Director at Franklin Road Christian School, and coaches our Men’s Varsity Basketball team.
Athletic Advisory Board Member: Bill Lam
Bill Lam earned his B.A. in Education from the University of Oklahoma, and went on to complete his M.A. in Education and Psychology. He coached wrestling at the University of North Carolina for thirty years. While there, Bill served on the Executive Committee for the Coaches Association, and also served on the NCAA rules committee. He now owns and operates his own business, Wrestling With Life. He also works with the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Nation of Coaches.
Athletic Advisory Board Member: Joe Kocur
Joseph Kocur is a retired professional ice hockey player, best known as one half of the “Bruise Brothers”, when playing for the Detroit Red Wings. Kocur’s achievements include Stanley Cup Champion: 1994-NYR; 1997, 1998, and 2002 Detroit. Joe is now living in Michigan with his wife Kristen, son Liam, and daughter, Kendall. He is a member of the Detroit Red Wings Alumni Association, and is active in its efforts to raise money for children’s charities in Metro Detroit.
Athletic Advisory Board Member: Robert Porcher III
Robert Porcher III, the All-Pro Detroit Lions defensive end, played in the NFL for 13 seasons. He was drafted in the first round from South Carolina State University in 1992, holds the Lions’ all-time career record of 95.5 sacks, and was voted to three NFC Pro Bowl teams.
In 2002, Porcher established the Detroit Football Classic, LLC and serves as the company’s President. The Detroit Football Classic is an annual Historically Black College football game played at Ford Field on Labor Day weekend. The inaugural game in 2003 featured Florida A&M and Alabama State University in front of a sellout crowd, and catapulted into the top three attended black college classics in the country.
Porcher broadened his business interests in 2004, as he became partner of Seldom Blues, a jazz and supper club on the Detroit Riverfront. He expanded his role in the restaurant industry later that year, when he became President of Southern Hospitality Restaurant Group, which owns and operates five restaurants in Detroit, including Seldom Blues, Detroit’s Breakfast House & Grill, Grand City Grille, Sweet Georgia Brown and The Woodward.
Also in 2004, Porcher and a group of investors purchased the Vinton Building in downtown Detroit for redevelopment into retail, commercial and residential use. The historic twelve-story building was originally designed by renowned Detroit architect Albert Kahn in 1917 and is located at Woodward and Congress.
Porcher recently accomplished one of his long-term goals as he graduated and received certification from the National Automobile Dealers Association’s Dealer Candidate Academy Program in March of 2007.
Porcher’s connection with the NFL remains strong with his association with the NFL Players Association. He originally was voted by his teammates to the Board of Player Representatives in 1997. He held that role until 2000 when he was named to the NFLPA’s Executive Committee, where he served until 2006. He also served on the Diversity Committee from 2003-06, and has been a member of the Agent Disciplinary Committee since 2005.
During Detroit’s preparation to host Super Bowl XL in 2006, Porcher chaired the Host Committee’s Community Relations Action Team. Soon after the successful SBXL, Porcher was named Chairman of the Board of the Detroit Metro Sports Commission, a subsidiary of the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau formed to bring regional, national and international amateur sporting events to Metro Detroit. He also serves as a board member of the DMCVB.
Porcher is a member of the NAACP Steering Committee and serves as a board member for the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation and for New Detroit, Inc., a coalition of Detroit leadership striving to eliminate inequities that stem from social and economic disparities. In 2006, Porcher was named a Detroit News Michigander of the Year “for his entrepreneurial efforts, charitable works and unwavering commitment to Detroit.”
His philanthropic interests are as strong as his business efforts, as has been shown over the years. He established the Porcher Cancer Research and Relief Fund at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center to provide financial assistance to families with children receiving treatment at the Center. With the Southern Hospitality Restaurant Group, Porcher teamed with University of Detroit Mercy to build an internship program for students to gain work experience in the SHRG corporate offices. He also participates in a motivational/inspirational speaker program with Detroit Metropolitan schools. Porcher has also been involved with DTE’s The Heat and Warmth Fund, the Police Athletic League, the Skillman Foundation, Focus: HOPE, and his own Porcher & Friends charitable organization which he founded as a rookie with the Detroit Lions.
Porcher holds a B.A. in Criminal Justice from South Carolina State University. He was inducted into the SCSU Athletic Hall of Fame and his jersey was retired by his alma mater in 1998.
Athletic Advisory Board Member: Jim McIntosh
Jim McIntosh graduated from Evangel College in Springfield, Missouri with a B.A. in Business Management. Following graduation, Jim played professional basketball in Vienna, Austria. Upon returning to the states, Jim joined General Motors, and has been employed there for over 30 years. Jim is now the Assistant Personnel Director for GM. In addition, he currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Boy Scouts of America.
Athletic Advisory Board Member: David Williams
David Williams graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration from Eastern Michigan University. He now serves as President of his own business, Global Growth Associates, an automotive manufacturer’s representative business, which supplies audio speaker, amplifiers, antennas, and other electronic components to global automotive companies.
David’s background in athletics is extensive. David was a part of the EMU program that reached the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament in 1989 and the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament “Sweet Sixteen” in 1991. He served as the EMU Men’s Basketball Booster Club President from 1988-1993. Since college, David has coached many of his children’s teams including basketball, baseball and volleyball. Presently, David is serving as Manager of his son, David’s, travel baseball team.
Athletic Advisory Board Member: Bill Ward
Bill Ward graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a B.S. in Exercise Physiology. He went on to Detroit College of Law to earn his J.D. Bill now practices law independently, and is a member of the Michigan Bar Association.
From 2004 to the present, Bill has been invited to coach Team USA in the 10 and 12 year age groups for the AAU Junior Olympics for Inline Hockey.
Athletic Advisory Board Member: Sharon Weaver
Sharon Weaver holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education and Dance from Indiana University and a Masters of Arts degree in Applied Physiology from Teachers College, Columbia University, New York.
Sharon began her professional career in New York City at The Convent of the Sacred Heart School where she taught Dance and Physical Education for girls in grades K-12 from 1988-1992. After earning her Masters degree she entered the medical field and held positions in Exercise Physiology working in Diabetes and Cardiac Rehabilitation at several Hospitals including Newark Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark, New Jersey, and the University of Michigan, Preventive Cardiology in Ann Arbor, MI. She also worked as a consultant for private physicians to design and implement comprehensive fitness programs for patients with metabolic disorders and clinical obesity.
Sharon’s involvement with athletics includes coaching the Women’s Varsity Tennis team, the Junior Varsity Volleyball team, the Elementary Basketball team, as well as Dance Director for Sacred Heart. She also served as the Director and Chairperson for the Athletic Association of Independent Schools Women’s Tennis program in New York City.
In 2006 Sharon took a position at Franklin Road Christian School where she taught Physical Education for grades K-12 and facilitated the development of a comprehensive K-12 Physical Education Curriculum. She is currently serving on the Athletic Advisory Board for Franklin Road Christian School.
Athletic Advisory Board Member: George Uzoni
George Uzoni majored in Mechanical Engineering at Lawrence Technological University. He has over 28 years experience in the Engineering/Tool Manufacturing Industry. Currently, George serves as the Engineering and Design Supervisor for Energy Conversion Devices. George played soccer for the Hamilton Red Stars Soccer Program-Ontario, and played college soccer. He continues his pursuit of the game with various soccer clubs in Detroit. George has been an invaluable member of our Athletic Field Complex committee. He has assisted greatly with the design and implementation of the entire project.
